Code Updates and Analysis Changes

The following new code updates were implemented in this version.

Technical Changes

The following list details changes to PV Elite and CodeCalc (Version 16.00.01.000), which may affect the numeric results:

ASME Tubesheets

  • In the 2013 Edition of ASME VIII-1, Table UHX-8.1 did not include all eight load cases. Load case 4 is a design load case with full vacuum on both sides. The effective bolt load for load case 4 is 0, instead of what is shown in the ASME table. PV Elite use a value of 0 for the bolt load for this load case, which may reduce the required tubesheet thickness. This reduction occurs when vacuum pressures were entered, especially when the gasket has non-zero m and Y factors. When a nominal shell thickness is specified for the shell side of the exchanger, the software uses the value in the tubesheet calculations.

Flanges

  • For flanges that are subject to external pressures, when the flanges have a different internal and external temperature, PV Elite recalculates the flange and bolt allowables for the external temperature.

Exchanges with Thickened Shell Bands

  • With this version, the software now explicitly includes the extra weight of the shell band in the weight calculations. This enhancement changes all weight calculations, and affects all subsequent calculations involving weight. If you previously specified a mass to account for the extra shell band mass, remove this value.

EN 13445 Local Stress Analysis on Nozzles

  • With this version, EN-13445 local stress analysis on nozzles was revised. The graphs in this code standard (which also appear in PD 5500) determine stress concentration factors for applied forces and moments. Specifically, graphs 16.4-5, 16.4-6, 16.4-7, and 16.4-8 are in question. The curve labels are eb/ec = 0.0, 0.25, 1.0, and 0.5, respectively. Unfortunately, this configuration leads to multiple solutions for different values of eb/ec, which cannot be correct. PV Elite Development verified this using finite element analysis (FEA).

    Additionally, the graphs that precede the graphs in question, such as 16.4-3, the curves are correctly labeled as 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0, which leads to a unique solution for all eb/ec values in these ranges.

    For the spherical graphs, PV Elite Development deduced that the curves for 1.0 and 0.5 in the standard must be mislabeled, and implemented the graphs differently than the standard in PV Elite calculations. Furthermore, this local stress analysis was taken from PD 5500, and the graphs in that standard appear to have the same issue.

    Also, in the EN-13445 standard, the SCF is taken to be 1.0 at the edge of the pad, but this was not explicitly stated. Justification for this approach is found in PD 5500.

Code updates and analysis changes

  • ASME Section VIII Division 1 and Division 2010 new Code updates are incorporated. The updates includes:
    • ASME part UHX for Shell and Tube heat Exchangers.
    • The option of using App. 1-10 instead of UG-37 for all sizes of nozzles on cylinders and cones. This option can provide a more economical design.
    • New Appendix 2 Bolt space correction factor is implemented for flanges.
    • The new UG-45 minimum nozzle thickness table is now used.

  PV Elite 2007 Version 9.00 Changes & Enhancements

  • ASME code 2006 updates including those to material properties, Yield Stress Table, UHX, Appendix 2, etc.
  • The program can now perform load case factoring, i.e. 1.25WI + 1.1OW + IP. This helps comply with requests for combining Wind and Seismic in the same load case.
  • Added Brazilian Wind Code, NBR 6123. 
  • More Local Stress Analysis Options (Sustained, Expansion, Occasional). PV Elite can now use the global coordinate system for loadings on nozzles using WRC 107 and compare to defined allowables.
  • The entire EN and PD:5500 databases were reconstructed using material specifications supplied by BSI. The database now contains listings of UTS and yield versus temperature. 
  • There is now an option to import nozzle loads from CAESAR II output versions 4.5, 5.0, and 5.10. 
  • PV Elite can also import nozzle loads from Excel.
  • PV Elite now computes Heat Exchanger Shellside and Tubeside MAWP's and MAPnc's by iteration. 
  • There are overrides for various Heat Exchanger Inputs such as MAWP, MAPnc and hydrotest pressures on the shell and channel side.
  • The nozzle design pressures have been updated to go along with the new exchanger MAWP calculations. If the MAWP option is used for nozzle design in Exchangers, PV Elite has now separated these values out for the shell and channel sides.
  • EN Skirt Analysis. The holes in skirt analysis now checks the additional requirements based on the EN-13445 design rules.
  • The India Seismic Code was updated for the 2002 version of IS-1893.
  • The Support Lug design now includes bolt area requirements and Bottom plate thickness requirements from AD-Merkblatt have also been added.
  • There have been updates to the ASCE-98/02/IBC 03 Seismic Codes for vertical load considerations.
  • The ASCE 7-05 Wind Code is now referenced (same as the previous code).
  • User defined section ring data is now stored in the input file. For custom section rings, the data can be easily recalled.
  • Updated and improved Output processor, specially the export to MS Word.
  • The Chinese Wind Code GB 50011 - 2001 has been added.
  • The Chinese Seismic Code GB 50009 - 2001 has been added.

  • Unity Check calculation for External Loadings on 5500 Cones with and without knuckles per B.7 has been added.
